What makes these photographs particularly significant within My Father, My Son is who is behind the camera. James is Sam's father. I am Sam’s Stepfather. The three of us exist within the same relationship, but occupy very different positions within it. In choosing to photograph Sam and James together, I wanted to acknowledge the bond that is distinct from my own; one that deserves to be seen, and celebrated, on its own terms. The directness and honesty of their gaze is at the heart of this project.
